Chapter 2: Methodology

This chapter provides a detailed discussion of the protocol of the study. This describes all the methods in order to conduct the research. In the proposal manuscript, this section presents the design and planning phase of the study. In the final manuscript, it presents the study design, plan, implementation, iterations and actual events and details that transpired in the data collection and analysis of the study. Take note that based on the type of study that you are doing, the parts may vary.

Table 1
Parts of chapter 2 and short description for each
Section
Description

Research Design

Discusses the general type of research, and the specific design/s of the study

Research Locale
Presents the geographical and social attributes of where the study was conducted

Research Instrument
Discusses the tool/s used to collect data

Population and Sampling
Describes the attributes of the persons wherein which the data will be collected from, and the way they will be selected for the study

Intervention Protocol*
Describes the step-by-step procedure of the intervention/treatment/IV manipulation in the study. This section is only applicable for experimental and interventional studies.

Data Collection Procedure
Describes the step-by-step procedure undertaken by the researcher/s in order to gather and store data

Data Analysis Procedure
Describes the procedures and techniques used by the researcher to analyze and make inferences from the raw data collected and answer every research question

 Ethical Considerations
Discloses the ethical concerns present in the study and the actions done to address these to protect research subjects

Ensuring Trustworthiness*
Explains the techniques that the researcher used to enhance the rigor of the study. Only applicable for studies with qualitative design components.

Based on the research design you are using, the nomenclature of the parts may be changed. For example, case studies may use “data sources” instead of population and sampling. Some critical studies may use, “data construction procedure” instead of data collection procedure. Some qualitative studies may use “analysis of information” instead of data analysis procedure.

Before presenting the first section of chapter 2 (research design), include a short introductory paragraph that outlines the parts included in your study.
