The title page is the first page
of the research paper/proposal. Below is an example of a title page, together
with the general formatting guidelines for its major parts.
The title page has five parts: (1)
title; (2) institutional affiliation; (3) degree information; (4) name of
author, and; (5) month and year of publication.
Title. The guidelines in writing the title of the study is as
follows:
1. Ideally,
the length of the title is 21 words. The presented should be an inverted
pyramid. Ideally, the title will not occupy more than three lines.
2. The
title should articulate the variables and/or phenomenon examined by study.
3. It
may contain the population and/or locale of the study, especially if the
disclosure of the context is important in the study.
4. The
title should give a clue on what the research design is. Examples are provided
below:
a. Some
titles imply the design used:
i. Family
profile and parenting styles as correlates of learning attitudes among
Paulinian Students (non-experimental, descriptive, correlational)
ii. Effect
of music therapy on the pain among children receiving influenza vaccination
(experimental: remember, only use the
word EFFECT if you are doing an experimental study)
iii. Lived
experiences of married Paulinian flight attendants (phenomenology)
iv. Towards
an understanding of the development of Christocentric Paschal spirituality
among SPC aspirants (grounded theory)
b. Some
titles may indicate the design used, especially if the study is a mixed methods
design, or the design is fairly new:
i. Mental
resilience and homesickness among OFW mothers in the Middle East: a sequential
explanatory mixed methods study
ii. Evaluation
of the human resource practices of one and two star hotels in Malate, Manila: a
multiple case study
iii. Towards
the development of nutritional and culinary guidelines for adolescents with
diabetes type 2: a Delphi study
iv. Aspiration
of young Aeta girls in Botolan, Zambales: a Photovoice approach
5. Studies
with outputs must indicate the name of the output. Examples are as follows:
a. Entrepreneurial
skills and socioeconomic status of mothers in Barangay 123 as input for a
livelihood training program (study focus, and then research output)
b. Development
of a media literacy scale for Filipino adolescents (research output only)
6. Although
creativity is welcome in constructing titles, a good title should be able to articulate
the study objectives clearly, in a straight-forward manner, with or without
figures of speech.
7. Based
on the design and results of the study, the proposal title may be different
with the final title of the study.
Institutional affiliation. This is placed eight (8) single spaces
after the last line of the title. Follow the box below for the general format:
